David Warner has named Marcus Harris as his replacement at the top of the order after stepping down from the sport's longest format.
Melbourne:
After retiring from the sport's
longest format, veteran Australian opener David Warner has chosen Marcus Harris
to replace him at the top of the order. Warner has previously stated that the
current three-Test series against Pakistan will be his final in the format.
While there has been speculation about his ideal replacement in red-ball
cricket, Warner has backed the 31-year-old Harris, whom he believes has been
around for a long time and that the selectors should trust.
"It's a difficult one. It is
obviously up to the judges. But from my vantage point, I feel like the person
who has worked their tail off and has been there in the background for a
while," Warner was quoted as saying by ESPNCricinfo on Tuesday.
"I believe Harry was that
person." He's toured, and he'll get that chance. He recently scored a
century for Victoria XI against the Pakistanis.
"He didn't play in a couple of
other games, but he's always been the guy who was next in line." "If
the selectors believe in him, I'm confident he'll come out and play the way he
does," he said.
"It's not all that dissimilar
to me." If he sees it in his areas, he goes for it and makes his shots,
and I believe he would fit in well." Harris has only played 14 Tests since
his debut in 2018, accumulating 607 runs at an average of 25.29, including
three half-centuries.
I'd be going for a traditional opener: Michael Hussey
Former Australia batter Michael
Hussey believes Warner should be replaced by someone who has dominated in the
Sheffield Shield and has been around the Australian Test team for a long time.
"One of the most difficult jobs
in the game is opening." So, if I had to choose, I'd go with a
traditional, proper opener," he explained. "Someone who has been
doing it for a long time." Because coming up with the order will be
difficult if you haven't done it much in your First-Class career.
I like whoever is dominating the
level below, who has been dominating Sheffield Shield cricket for a long time,
and to be fair, they have all done so at various points. As a result, the
selectors face a difficult task.
Hussey refused to name a replacement
for Warner, but he did rule out Mitchell Marsh, who has been "I'm not
saying you can't do it, and perhaps someone will evolve into that role."
"However, I think it would be difficult for someone like Mitch Marsh or
someone," he said.
"I know there's been talk about
him moving up the order, but I think he's better suited, like Travis Head, to
be in the middle." That, I believe, would be best for the Australian
team's overall balance."mentioned as a possible candidate.
